The Book Of Jewish Food

So….where does a ‘gentile’ chef of 20years non-kosher fine dining experience who now finds himself owner of a new Sydney based kosher catering business head for inspiration, …..a cultural compass, …..a food history/sociology lesson, ….and some beautiful essays on the subject of Jewish food?
The Book Of Jewish Food

The Book Of Jewish Food

Ms Claudia Roden of course! The writer of The Book Of Jewish Food.

A New Book of Middle Eastern Food was my first introduction to Claudia Roden as an apprentice chef at Rockpool restaurant.  I learnt so much from her and found a passion for the food of the region that remains with me to this day. At that time in the early 90’s it seemed nearly every cafe and restaurant in Sydney produced a version of her orange and almond cake from this book. So it was a joy to disover The Book Of Jewish Food (I bought it on Amazon) when I changed my catering business to kosher.
Claudia Roden was born to a cosmopolitan Jewish family in Cairo in 1936.
Her book begins “Every cuisine tells a story. Jewish food tells the story of an uprooted, migrating people and their vanished worlds. It lives in peoples minds and has been kept alive because of what it evokes and represents”.
If you like your cookbooks deviod of trite food styling, “new for the sake of new” recipes, and you enjoy the history of food, buy The Book Of Jewish Food. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Keep Cooking,
John
